Inclusive Education Workshop on Deaf Teacher Guide in Khartoum
On 26th of October the Khartoum office of UNESCO in collaboration with the Special Education Department of the Sudanese Ministry of Education (MoE), the Sudanese National Commission for Education, Science and Culture organized a workshop to discuss the teacher’s manual for the schools and centers with deaf students – both, for basic and secondary levels of formal education. The workshop contributed to the development of inclusive education in Sudan, addressing the issues of deaf students and their integration to the society, building appropriate capacities among teachers and education professionals involved in the process.
Around 39 teachers and other relevant professionals participated in the workshop representing the Special Education and Examination Departments of the MoE, the National Council for people with Disabilities, schools and centers for deaf students, and the NGOs working in the field of education for children with disabilities. After discussions and intensive group work, the workshop:
· Recommended a set of modifications improving the quality of the manual under discussion;
· Agreed to present the modified manual to the National Center for Curriculum Development and Educational Research of the MoE for the final approval and endorsement in 2 weeks’ time;
· Recommended to the Examination Department of the MoE to develop unique system of certification for deaf students in the country, and to introduce appropriate examinations – involving the education professionals from the Sudanese states working in the M&E and Examination areas.
