Intangible Heritage Assessment Workshop in Sudan

On 13-17 January 2019, the UNESCO Khartoum office in coordination with the Sudanese National Council for Cultural Heritage Local Languages Development (NCCH), Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Antiquities (MoCTA), and the Sudanese National Commission for Education, Science and Culture organized an Assessment Workshop for Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) Inventorying in Sudan. The workshop took place in the Kanon Hotel, Khartoum 2, and covered 32 Sudanese ICH professionals, including 15 women and 18 participants from out-of-metropolis.  The workshop is a part of a project on ICH Capacity Building in Sudan, funded by the UAE.

The opening session of the workshop was honored by H.E. Mr. Omer Suleiman Adam, the Minister of Culture Tourism and Antiquities, H.E. Mr. Hamad El Juneibi, the UAE Ambassador to Sudan, H.E. Mohamad Razdan, the Ambassador of Malaysia to Sudan, and H.E. Mr. Pavel Kroupkine, the UNESCO Representative to Sudan, who greatly valued the objectives of the project (building in Sudan an infrastructure of working with ICH), UAE鈥檚 generosity, and UNESCO鈥檚 activity.

 

The Workshop spanned from 13 to 17 January 2019, under leadership of the ICH experts Dr. Ismail Fihail from Sudan and Dr. Ahmed Skounti from Morocco. Many distinguished Sudanese scholars were involved in the work, such as Dr. Muna Abubaker and Prof. Mohamed Al Mahdi Bushra from the Afro-Asian Research Center, Prof. Intisar El-Zain Segereeon from the University of Khartoum, and many others.

 

The technical sessions from 13 to 15 January, covered: (a) Introduction to community-based inventorying (b) Assessment of existing inventorying Experiences (c) Assessment of Previous and Existing Experiences (d) Assessment of Previous and Existing Experiences (e) Regional and International Good Practice in inventorying (f) Developing an inventory Frame work for Sudan Where a system is in place鈥 (g) Developing a plan for inventorying  (h) Identification and inventorying (i) Methods and Techniques of inventorying (j) Developing a plan inventorying and (K) Ethics in community of  ICH. On 16 January 2019, the participants of the Workshop were in the Heritage House, and looked into the tradition of coffee making in Sudan. On the final day, 17 January 2019, the Workshop focused on developing an action plan for inventorying ICH elements in Sudan, which was followed by the closing session.
