Inter-Ministerial Conference on Biosphere Reserves in the Caribbean starts to bear fruit: Sint Maarten working on its first biosphere reserve proposal

In 2013, the Government of Saint Kitts and Nevis and the MAB Programme organized the first Inter-Ministerial and Experts Conference on Biosphere Reserves in the Caribbean Sub-Region, held in Saint Kitts (26鈥27 March).
During the conference, Caribbean countries established a three-year action plan with the aim of creating a network of biosphere reserves in the Caribbean Small Islands States.
The Conference started to bear fruit: the Prime Minister of Sint Maarten, Sarah Wescot-Williams, met with Committee Chairperson and Secretary-General for UNESCO Sint Maarten, Marcelia Henry, to discuss a road map for the establishment of a biosphere reserve in Sint Maarten.
During the discussions a decision was taken to focus on a proposal for the listing of the Man of War Shoal Marine Protected Area and Mullet Pond, with the possible addition of Fort Amsterdam. The areas were chosen based on existing government commitments to protect the areas and the ongoing management activities thereof. The committee will shortly present the MAB project to the Council of Ministers of Sint Maarten.
