International Conference on Artificial Intelligence & Education

MayCo-organized by UNESCO, the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China and the National Commission of the People’s Republic of China for UNESCO, this international conference on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and education brought together from 16 to 18 May over 500 international representatives from more than 120 Member States, including 70 government ministers and almost 100 representatives from UN agencies, academic institutions, civil society and the private sector.
Thematic panels on the links between AI and UNESCO’s fields of competence took place throughout these three days, including a panel dedicated to the promotion of gender equality. Chairing this panel, Ms Saniye Gülser Corat called attention to the fact that AI is far from being “value-free”: “Bias is often embedded in data and algorithms, which means that AI can reproduce prejudice – and even amplify it. The fact that so few women are involved in programming AI and thinking about the data sets to feed into it most likely exacerbates this problem.
Ms Corat also introduced the speakers of this panel, which included H.E. Ms Kudayberdieva Gulmira Karimovna, Minister of Education and Science, Kyrgyzstan; H.E. Ms Khanthaly Siriphongphanh, Vice Minister, Ministry of Education and Sports, Lao People's Democratic Republic; Ms Moojan Asghari, Co-Founder, Women in AI; and Ms Ethel Agnes Pascua-Valenzuela, Director, Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO), Thailand.
