International Day for Women and Girls in Science 2019 in Sudan, in Hantoub, Greater Wad Medani, Algezira State

On 11 February 2019, the UNESCO Khartoum Office in partnership with UN Women, the UNESCO Chair for Women in Sciences and Technology and Al Gazeera University organized celebration of International Day for Women and Girls in Science on the premises of Education Colleague of Algezira University in Hantoub, Greater Wad Medani, Algezira State, Sudan. The event attracted more than 50 participants, including representatives from UN Women, UNESCO, distinguished educators from the Algezira state and UNESCO Chair for Women in Sciences and Technology. The event and was honoured by H.E. Mrs. Om Salma Ismail, the State Minister for Prime Minister Affairs, and H.E. Prof. Mohamed Al Sanosi, the Vice Chancellor of the Algezira University.

 

The celebration of International Day for Women and Girls in Science took place 2nd time in Sudan, and aimed to promote gender equality in science, and involving girls in STEM education, which is a global problem for the humanity worldwide. In addition to this, it was highlighted the item from the Sudanese agenda: establishing STEM Girls Clubs in the country, and items from the state’s agenda: strengthening the STEM Girls Club at Al Gazeera University, and partnership between organizers of the event.

During the opening session, H.E. Mrs. Om Salma Ismail, the State Minister for Prime Minister Affairs, encouraged women to go to science, and stressed on fruitfulness of a cooperation between government and people to rise above all challenges. H.E. Prof. Mohamed Al Sanosi, the Vice Chancellor at Al Gazeera University, promised to continue the efforts of the University to give more and better opportunities for women and girls. Prof. Alshefa Abdelgadir, the Director of the UNESCO Chair for Women in Science and Technology, delivered outlines of her research of presence women in Sudanese Academia, which she led in frameworks of UNESCO’s project for Advancing Gender in Science (SAGA), and overviewed the achievements of creating / promoting STEM Girls Clubs, which she forced together with the UNESCO Khartoum office. Mr. Abdullah Ismail, the Communication Officer at UN Women, declared UN Women support for women in Sudan. Mr. Abdelgadir Salih, the Programme Officer for Sciences in UNESCO, referring to ancient Sudanese queens highlighted deep roots for Gender Equality in Sudan, and praised the results of the SAGA project’s report, which show strong presence of women in Sudanese STEM areas.

 

Then, Prof. Alshefa Abdelgadir, the Director of the UNESCO Chair for Women in Sciences and Technology, lectured about Chair activities including SAGA Project and STEM Girls Clubs, in addition to a presentation from Dr. Amna Dirar on STEM Girls Clubs.

 

During the entertainment breaks, the participants enjoyed by songs of the Coral group from the Algezira University.
