International Literacy Day 2016 in the Khartoum / Omdurman / Bahri metropolis

On the 6-8 September 2016, The Khartoum office of UNESCO with partners organized three events celebrating the World Literacy Day with the general theme “Reading the past, Writing the future” in the Khartoum / Omdurman / Bahri metropolis.

The first event took place on the 6^th of September in the Khartoum state, Bahri City. It was organized in collaboration with the National Union of Sudanese Youth for Literacy and Adult Education (NCLAE). In particular, during this event 15 youth were registered as students in out-of-school classroom with income generating learning program canceling their previous status of “street children”. The event was attended by the commissioner of Bahri locality in Khartoum state.

The second event was organized in collaboration with the Education and Scientific Research Committee (ESRC)of the National Assembly of Sudan (NA), and it took place on the 7^th September in the NA’s Green Hall. Speeches were delivered by the head of the NA, professor Ibrahim Ahmed Omer, the head of the ESRC of NA, Dr. Mobarak Elnour Elkhair, the Secretary General (SG)of the NCLAE, Mr. Mohamed Hamad Mohamed, as well as by the Programme Officer of the Khartoum office of UNESCO, Dr. Aiman Badri They were followed by a discussion session on the status of literacy and adult education in Sudan facilitated by the SG of NCLAE

The third event was organized in collaboration with different national partners, and took place in the NCLAE on the 8^th of September of 2016. The event was addressed by the NCLAE Secretary General, Mr Mohamed Hamad Mohamed, the MoE representative, the Deputy Head of the ESRC NA, as well as UNESCO Khartoum. The exposition associated with the International Literacy Day presented current activities of the participants – UNESCO, the MoE of the Khartoum state, different NGOs. Each participating NGO presented itself and its activities. In the end of the event the participants enjoyed by a performance of a band of disabled youth (“Cheer”).
