International Women Day 2018 in the Khartoum / Omdurman / Bahri metropolis

On 7-8 March 2018, the UNESCO Khartoum Office organized two events with the Sudanese Journalist Union (SJU) for women-journalists, and contributed to joint UN celebration with other UN agencies and NGOs. The first event took place on 7 March in the garden of the SJU with more than 250 participants. Music, speeches about UNESCO’s and SJU’s projects with Empowering Women aspect, and deep gratitude to Italian Republic, which supports the areas of Empowering Women in Sudanese Media and Rural Radio Development in Sudan had driven the event – making participants involved and happy.

The second event took place in the Dutch Embassy, where H.E. Dr. Karin Boven, the Ambassador of Netherlands to Sudan, invited representatives of UNESCO, SJU, and SIHA to discuss the issues of Empowering Women in relaxed atmosphere (in total – about 60 guests). Music, presentations of the activities, and group work made the event funny and amazing. Women-journalists decided to provide an informational support to women-activists from Strategic Initiative for Women in The Horn of Africa (SIHA Network).

Then, the UNESCO Khartoum office also contributed to and participated in the event, organized by the UN joint team under leadership of UN Women. The team consisted of representatives from UNDP, UNOPS, UNFPA, WHO, UNCHR, UNESCO, UNICEF, UN habitat, UN OCHA, WFP, and, on top of this, from NGOs Gesr Centre, SPDP, Zainab Foundation, Community Development Association, (CDA), Sudanese Development Association (SDA), youth forum and Shamaa foundation. The event took place on 8 March on UN Women premises in Petronas building in Khartoum at 9:30-16:30. The event was honoured by heads of the participated UN agencies and by Dr. Ali Mohamed Khair, the Undersecretary of the Ministry of the Social Security and Development.  Almost 500 people attended the event communicating with each other, and enjoying exhibitions and musical performances.
