Africa’s Ocean Leaders Convene in Mombasa for the Eighth Session of UNESCO-IOC Sub-Commission (IOCAFRICA-VIII)

From 7 to 9 May 2025, Africa’s coastal and island nations, regional organizations, and international partners are gathering in Mombasa, Kenya, for the Eighth Session of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO Sub-Commission for Africa and the Adjacent Island States (IOCAFRICA-VIII).
This milestone event provides a strategic platform to review progress, coordinate priorities, and strengthen regional cooperation in ocean science, services, and policy. Taking place at a critical midpoint of the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021–2030), the session will help align African regional ocean initiatives with global sustainable ocean goals.
The session also aims to reinforce capacity development, bolster data and observation systems, and amplify African leadership in ocean governance and marine science. With a strong focus on partnerships and collaboration, IOCAFRICA-VIII will contribute to ensuring that Africa’s unique ocean challenges and opportunities are central to the global ocean agenda.
