I. Background
UNESCO, as the United Nations agency mandate to promote 鈥渢he free flow of ideas by word and image,鈥 play a leading role in preservation and accessibility of documentary heritage through its Memory of the World Programme. Documentary heritage in archives, libraries and museums constitutes a major part of the memory of the world and reflects the diversity of peoples, languages and cultures.
The PEACE Project (Peace Education, Archives Preservation and Digitalization for Youth Empowerment) is a key initiative of UNESCO Phnom Penh that supports Cambodia's efforts in documentary heritage preservation, advancing peace education, and youth engagement. Central to the project is the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum (TSGM)鈥攁 key site of memory from the Khmer Rouge era鈥攚hich houses one of the most comprehensive archives collections documenting the atrocities committed during Democratic Kampuchea (1975鈥1979). In recognition of its historical significance, the TSGM archives were inscribed on the UNESCO Memory of the World Register in 2009.
UNESCO, in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts (MoCFA) and the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, with financial support from the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), implemented Phase I of the project. This phase focused on preservation over 745,000 pages of records and digitized nearly half a million to ensure long-term access. These efforts all include establishing a secure digital archives and cataloguing system, as well as creating bilingual website to make the archive wisely accessible.
Building on this foundation, Phase II has expended the project scope to adopts an intersectoral approach. It continues preservation and access efforts while introducing new initiatives that link documentary heritage with peace education, youth engagement, and cultural heritage conservation鈥攊ncluding site conservation at M-13, Tuol Sleng and Choeung Ek Genocidal Center鈥攁nd supports the potential nomination of Tuol Sleng as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
I. Scope of the Assignment
Under the overall authority of the Head of Office and UNESCO Representative to Cambodia, and direct supervision of the National Project Officer of Communication and Information (CI) Unit, the intern will support the PEACE Project and other cross-cutting initiatives by undertaking the following tasks:
- Conduct preparatory research and analysis in support of project activities in any of the following areas: documentary heritage, archives preservation and digitization, genocide memory, peace education, site conservation, or related cultural and educational initiatives.
- Assist with organizing and coordinating project activities, including logistics for events such as technical meetings, steering committee sessions, consultation workshops, field visits, and public outreach initiatives.
- Contribute to the development of communication materials鈥攄rafting, translating, and designing content such as social media posts, website articles, newsletters, brochures, and briefs in alignment with project goals and key commemoration dates.
- Prepare and revise internal and external documents, including meeting minutes, background notes, official correspondence, terms of reference, and memos.
- Organize and format project documentation for reporting purposes, including activity briefs, progress updates, and monitoring and evaluation data.
- Support partner coordination with institutions such as the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts (MoCFA), Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum (TSGM), including scheduling, note-taking, and providing translation and interpretation (Khmer鈥揈nglish) when needed.
- Undertake any additional tasks or responsibilities as assigned by the National Project Officer to support effective project delivery and learning.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND COMPETENCIES
Academic qualifications:
- You are currently enrolled in a graduate programme (master鈥檚 degree, PhD, or equivalent, second university degree or higher).
- You have recently graduated with a master鈥檚 degree or PhD (or second degree as defined above), 12 months prior to the start of the internship.
- Recent graduate of a graduate-level program (first or second degree as defined above), within 12 months prior to the start of the internship
The degree should be in a relevant field such as history, archaeology, genocide studies, architecture, international relations, English, archival studies, education, museum studies, cultural heritage, communication, or other relevant discipline in social and human sciences.
Languages:
- Excellent written and spoken both English and Khmer.
Skills and Competencies:
- Demonstrated interest in cultural heritage conservation, documentary heritage, genocide studies, education, and post-conflict reconciliation.
- Ability to use Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and graphic tools (e.g. Photoshop, Illustrator) is desirable.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Work effectively in multicultural environments.
