Kazakhstan Sets National Priorities to Address Cryosphere Challenges

A national workshop was held in Almaty on 15–16 April 2025 as part of the GEF-UNDP-UNESCO project “Strengthening the resilience of Central Asian countries by enabling regional cooperation to assess glacio-nival systems to develop integrated methods for sustainable development and adaptation to climate change.” The workshop aimed to translate regional priorities into actionable steps at the national level.
The event brought together representatives from governmental bodies, scientific and academic institutions, as well as regional and non-governmental organizations, including universities and civil society groups. Building on the outcomes of the recent subregional workshop in Samarkand, participants focused on defining Kazakhstan’s priorities to enhance cryosphere monitoring systems, improve data flow, develop knowledge products, and strengthen institutional capacities.
The workshop facilitated the formation of a multi-institutional working group to lead national-level coordination and outlined strategic directions aligned with Kazakhstan’s climate adaptation commitments and relevant international frameworks such as the UN 2030 Agenda and the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction.
Participants also explored opportunities to strengthen regional cooperation on cryosphere-related issues, recognizing the importance of joint efforts in addressing shared climate challenges.
