Uzbekistan Advances Plans for Resilience to Cryosphere Changes

A national workshop was held in Tashkent on 29–30 April 2025 as part of the GEF-UNDP-UNESCO project “Strengthening the resilience of Central Asian countries by enabling regional cooperation to assess glacio-nival systems to develop integrated methods for sustainable development and adaptation to climate change.” The event focused on defining Uzbekistan’s national priorities for cryosphere monitoring and climate resilience.
This workshop marked the third in a regional series of national workshops across Central Asia, following similar events in Kazakhstan and Tajikistan. It brought together representatives from government institutions, scientific organizations, academia, and civil society to translate regional dialogue into targeted national action.
Participants worked to identify specific measures to improve glacier, snow, and permafrost monitoring, enhance processed data exchang, strengthen research and knowledge products, and build national institutional capacities. The workshop also facilitated the establishment of a multi-institutional working group to guide implementation efforts.
The series of national workshops will continue in Turkmenistan and the Kyrgyz Republic and is expected to conclude in June 2025.
