On the 13^th of February 2016 the Khartoum / Omdurman / Barhi metropolis joined the worldwide celebration of World Radio Day 2016. The celebration was organized by the Khartoum office of UNESCO, the Sudanese National Commission for Education, Science and Culture, and the National Corporation for Radio and Television (NCRT). The event took place in Al-Azhari Radio Studio, Omdurman.  

The event was honored by the Minister of Information HE. Dr. Ahmed Bilal Osman,  the Director of the NCRT Dr. Al-Zubair Osman Ahmed, representatives of private TV and radio channels operating in Khartoum / Omdurman / Bahri metropolis, broadcasters, administrators and technicians from the NCRT.

The National Radio organized a live transmission of the event to the public, which lasted for one hour from 2:00 till 3:00 pm.

Dr. Salah Aldin Al-Toum, the General Director of Omdurman National Radio, welcomed everyone and expressed appreciation for UNESCO’s role this year in celebrating the Day. In his speech, the Director of the NCRT appreciated the initiative of UNESCO in celebrating the event, which is considered as a good encouragement for National Radio as well as all other radio channels to improve the quality of media services to serve the communities, especially in the remote rural areas, where the radio is, sometimes, the only source of information and news. Professor Salah Eldeen Elfadel, the Dean of the Information Department in ElAhliya University and x-manager in National Radio, presented a paper under the tittle “The role of radio during emergency and disasters in Sudan”, which is the theme of World Radio Day 2016. During his speech, Dr. Pavel Kroupkine, the UNESCO Representative to Sudan and the Head of the Khartoum office, stated the importance of radio in the times of emergency and disaster, and also delivered to the audience the message of the Director General of UNESCO on the occasion of World Radio Day 2016. Dr. Pavel also confirmed the readiness of UNESCO for cooperation with the media sector in Sudan, putting special attention to the field of community radios. The message of UNESCO’s DG was repeated one more time in Arabic by Dr. Aiman Badri, the Programme Specialist of UNESCO.

In the final part of the event, two old workers of the National Radio were awarded by the Director of the NCRT Dr. Al-Zubair Osman Ahmed in the presence of the UNESCO Representative. The UNESCO Khartoum office was also awarded a certificate. Then, after some time of free communication of the participants, the event was closed.
