Learning for People, Planet, Prosperity and Peace
The UNESCO Regional Office for Southern Africa (ROSA) in collaboration with the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education will join the rest of the world to commemorate the International Day of Education (IDE) on 24th January 2020.
This year’s celebrations will run under the theme, “Learning for People, Planet, Prosperity and Peace,” examining the many ways learning can empower people, protect the planet, build shared prosperity and foster peace.
A Media Breakfast Forum is scheduled to take place at the UNESCO ROSA Offices on 24th January 2020 where the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education and UNESCO will deliver key messages to be followed by a discussion with media professionals.
A number of other activities are planned for the day including a visit to David Livingstone Junior School in Harare where tree planting and quiz sessions will take place.
The Zimbabwe commemoration activities are a call to action for all stakeholders to fulfil their crucial role in ensuring education for all.
The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 24 January as International Day of Education, in celebration of the role of education for peace and development. Without inclusive and equitable quality education and lifelong opportunities for all, countries will not succeed in achieving gender equality and breaking the cycle of poverty that is leaving millions of children, youth and adults behind.
The 2020 celebration will position education and the learning it enables as humanity’s greatest renewable resource and reaffirm the role of education as a fundamental right, a public good and an enabler of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres has emphasised the importance of education by saying, “We must do far more to advance Sustainable Development Goal 4, to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.”
Education is at the heart of both personal and community development. Its mission is to help all people develop their talents fully and to realise their creative potentials, including responsibility for their own lives and the capacity to contribute to society.
It also contributes to the development of skills, concepts and tools that can help reverse or stop unsustainable practices and allow humans to live in greater harmony with the natural world.
