Makary and UNESCO: safety equipment for media professionals handed over

Beirut, May 17, 2024 – His Excellency Mr. Ziad Makary, Minister of Information received from the UNESCO Office in Beirut 10 sets of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for media professionals. Additional 5 complete sets were provided to Mr. Ali Alloush, Head of Press Photographers Syndicate. This initiative aims to respond to the safety needs of journalists and photographers to be able to report in unstable conditions.

The PPE sets, which comply to applicable international standards, constitute one more element within the longstanding and robust partnership between the Ministry and UNESCO in support of the media landscape. Specialized expertise had been previously extended to update the existing media law in line with international best practices. Recently technical assistance has been offered to prepare a nomination file focused on the TeleLiban archives that, once ready, will be submitted to the UNESCO program the “Memory of the World”, highlighting the archives invaluable treasure. 

H.E. Mr. Makary thanked UNESCO "Sharing our concern for the freedom of expression and the safety of media workers, UNESCO responded to the request of the Ministry of Information and provided safety equipment for media professionals.” Makary also underlined the strong cooperation between UNESCO and the Ministry in different areas, and particularly media, and called all media institutions to multiply efforts to protect media professionals, journalists, and photographers in Lebanon.

Just a few days after the World Press Freedom Day celebrated internationally on 2-3 May in Santiago of Chile, I am pleased to confirm once more UNESCO commitment to support in concrete terms freedom of expression in Lebanon in close collaboration with the Ministry of Information and all concerned stakeholders.” said Ms. Costanza Farina, Director of the UNESCO Regional Office in Beirut.
