Mutual Learning on Water Civilization and Promoting Water Cooperation | The 2024 World Water Day Open Day was held in Hangzhou

This event was hosted by the China Institute of Water Resources and Hydropower Research (IWHR) and the UNESCO Regional Office for East Asia (UNESCO Beijing) and was jointly organized by the National Water Museum of China, the International Association for Hydro-Environment Engineering (IAHR), the International Research and Training Center on Erosion and Sedimentation (IRTCES), and IAHR China Chapter. Dr. Peng Jing, President of the China Institute of Water Resources and Hydropower Research, Prof. Shahbaz Khan, Director of the UNESCO Regional Office for East Asia, Chen Yexing, Chief Engineer of the Zhejiang Provincial Department of Water Resources, Chen Yongming, Director of the National Water Museum of China, leaders and experts from directly affiliated institutions of the Ministry of Water Resources and local institutions, as well as representatives from embassies and general consulates of Pakistan, Mongolia, Indonesia, Mexico, Brazil, Uruguay, Austria, Denmark, Australia in China, attended the event.

The theme of 2024 World Water Day is "Water for Peace", emphasizing the important role of water in promoting peace and prosperity, and achieving sustainable development.
The 2024 World Water Day Open Day event aims to build a platform for exchange and dialogue among different water cultures, as well as mutual learning among different water civilizations, through museum research, salon exchange and discussion, and urban water system investigation. The aim is to appreciate the beauty of diverse water civilizations, discuss water governance strategies from various countries, and use water as a medium to promote global water cooperation and jointly build a harmonious future between people and water.
Salon Dialogue: Discuss Good Water Management Strategies Together
Dr. Peng Jing, President of the China Institute of Water Resources and Hydropower Research, Prof. Shahbaz Khan, Director of the UNESCO Regional Office for East Asia, Chen Yexing, Chief Engineer of the Zhejiang Provincial Department of Water Resources, Chen Yongming, Director of the National Water Museum of China, attended the opening ceremony of the Salon Dialogue and delivered speeches.

Dr. Peng Jing stated that in the current context of climate change and population growth, global water resource management is facing increasingly severe challenges. As a pioneer in national water technology innovation, the China Institute of Water Resources and Hydropower Research has always adhered to facing the forefront of world science and technology, the main battlefield of the economy, major national needs, and people's health. It is committed to using water technology to ensure national water security and promote sustainable socio-economic development. At the same time, it actively carries out international cooperation and exchanges, and has made positive contributions to promoting global water technology innovation and development, promoting good water management practices and experience sharing, and building a global water cooperation partnership.

Prof. Shahbaz Khan stated that in today's world, a series of challenges such as water scarcity, water pollution, and climate change are intertwined, and the importance of technical innovation and international cooperation is becoming increasingly prominent. He praised China's series of measures to promote the construction of a water-saving society, the implementation of integrated water resources management (IWRM), and the construction of water ecological civilization, and highly recognized China's contribution to promoting international exchanges and cooperation in water related areas and promoting the harmonious coexistence of man and nature through the “Belt and Road” Initiative, the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation and other platforms. He elaborated on the concept of UNESCO on water related issues, calling for global solidarity and strengthened cooperation to promote harmony and prosperity through effective water resource management, and to use water to help achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Chen Yexing stated that Zhejiang Province has a long tradition of water management. The ancestors have accumulated valuable experience in water resource utilization, created a brilliant water conservancy civilization, and laid a solid foundation for the development of Zhejiang in the long river of history. Zhejiang Province will continue to leverage its advantages in water resources and water culture, and work together with governments of various countries to jointly promote the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals related with water.

Chen Yongming stated that as one of the largest water-themed national museums in the world, the National Water Museum of China is committed to promoting water culture, actively carrying out water education for the public, and striving to enhance people's water knowledge and awareness. Against the backdrop of increasingly severe global water challenges, National Water Museum of China extensively engages in international exchanges. As a member of the Global Water Museum Alliance, it exchanges experiences and learns from similar institutions around the world, actively shares water knowledge, water culture, and water education experiences. With the museum as a platform, it promotes the construction of an international partnership network, helps to raise public water awareness, gather the wisdom and strength of the whole society to build global water security, and jointly create a beautiful future of harmonious coexistence between humans and nature.
Salon Discussion
Representatives from various countries held a dialogue on "using water as a medium to promote the construction of a community with a shared future for mankind", expressing appreciation for China's achievements in water development and technical innovation in recent years, sharing their water wisdom in addressing challenges such as climate change, and discussing the beautiful vision of conducting water related scientific and technical cooperation with China to jointly achieve sustainable development of water resources.
Co-creating the “2024 World Water Day” Commemorative Album
Representatives from various countries jointly created a commemorative album for “2024 World Water Day”, which was jointly presented to the National Water Museum of China by the China Institute of Water Resources and Hydropower Research and the UNESCO Regional Office for East Asia.

Research and Investigation: Appreciating the Beauty of Diverse Water Civilizations Together
During the event, representatives from various countries visited the National Water Museum of China to gain a deeper understanding of China's water management history and achievements, and conducted research and investigations to the urban water system and water cultural heritage of Hangzhou.
