A new chapter in the strategic partnership between Japan and UNESCO
UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay this morning held her first meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.
The Director-General declared, 鈥淲e welcome today鈥檚 commitment to open a new chapter in cooperation between UNESCO and Japan. It is a sign of renewed confidence in our Organization. The reinforcement of our strategic partnership reflects shared priorities, starting with education, including education for sustainable development and the education of girls and women. We are also very appreciative of Japan鈥檚 support for our engagement in the reflection on artificial intelligence, and for our emblematic UNESCO initiative Reviving the Spirit of Mosul. Finally, we will bolster our joint action on natural disaster prevention and response through science and education.鈥
As a strategic partner, Japan, which is particularly vulnerable to natural disasters, also works with UNESCO on the natural disaster risk prevention and mitigation. On women's education, Japan鈥檚 support has allowed for the launch of a major project for women's literacy in Afghanistan, which has benefitted 750,000 people. Japan is one of UNESCO's key partners in its reflection on the definition of the principles that need to guide the development of artificial intelligence and partnered with the Organization in the round table, Artificial Intelligence: Reflection on its Impact on our Society, which took place at UNESCO on 11 September.
