Gaborone, Botswana - The government of Botswana, in a landmark partnership with UNESCO, the Media Institute for Southern Africa (MISA), the Southern African Development Community (SADC), and various media stakeholders, is set to host the 31st edition of World Press Freedom Day at the University of Botswana Conference Center on the 3rd and 4th of May 2024.
Celebrated every 3rd of May, this year鈥檚 theme, 鈥淎 Press for the Planet: Journalism in the face of the Environmental Crisis,鈥 underscores the pivotal role of journalism and freedom of expression in communicating our planet鈥檚 pressing environmental challenges.
The event will serve as a platform for journalists to enhance their reporting on environmental issues, which is crucial for the achievement of sustainable development goals. Accurate, timely, and comprehensive journalism is vital in informing the public about environmental consequences and potential solutions.
The regional commemorations will celebrate the essential role of the press and journalism in providing access to information, thereby securing a sustainable future that honors individual rights, diversity of voices, and gender equality.
World Press Freedom Day, proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in December 1993 and celebrated annually on the anniversary of the Declaration of Windhoek, stands as a testament to the global commitment to press freedom.
This year鈥檚 event will also feature the launch of the State of Press Freedom Report in Southern Africa by MISA, and the Media Viability in Southern Africa Report by Media Monitoring Zimbabwe, offering insights into the media landscape post-Covid-19 pandemic.
