Reflection on Intangible Cultural Heritage and Universities

The Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of UNESCO meets annually to promote the objectives of the 2003 UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, provide advice on best practices and formulate recommendations on measures for the safeguarding of the intangible cultural heritage.
Within the framework of this fourteenth meeting, the UNESCO Regional Office in Montevideo together with the Network for Academic Cooperation in Intangible Cultural Heritage (ReCA PCI LAC), organized the parallel session on "Intangible Cultural Heritage and Universities: Challenges and Opportunities in Latin America and the Caribbean" with the objective of discussing the state of the art of higher education and Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) in the region and highlighting the challenges and opportunities for South-South cooperation related to the implementation of the 2003 Convention in this field.
This forum was an opportunity to raise awareness of the Network and to promote its work aimed at the challenges and opportunities identified during the reflection among various actors.
Prof. Alfredo Torre, representative of the Latin American School of Social Sciences (FLACSO), Ms. Sara Maneiro, Communications Specialist of the International Institute of Higher Education in Latin America and the Caribbean (IESALC), Mr. David Gómez, Technical Coordinator of the Regional Centre for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Latin America (CRESPIAL), Ms. Susanne Schnuttgen, Head of Unit for Capacity-Building and Heritage Policy of UNESCO's Living Heritage Entity and Mr Weonmo Park, representative of the International Information and Networking Centre for Intangible Cultural Heritage in the Asia-Pacific Region (ICHCAP).
This meeting was a forum for exchange and reflection on the state of the art of higher education and intangible cultural heritage in the region. In turn, it allowed the identification of challenges of this binomial and opportunities for South-South cooperation, which will facilitate coordinated actions in the future.
