The report on religious intolerance entitled II Relatório sobre intolerância religiosa: Brasil, América Latina e Caribe, published in Portuguese and organized by the Centre for Articulation of Marginalized Populations () and the Observatory of Religious Freedom (), with the support of UNESCO Brasilia, brings alarming data on the increase of hate speech.
An average of
of religious intolerance per day in 2022
To construct this rich overview, the team at OLIR sought to activate institutions and official databases on the theme. As a result, the Ministry of Women, Family and Human Rights (MMFDH), in partnership with the Institute of Public Security in Rio de Janeiro (ISP) and the State Secretariat for Human Rights from Rio de Janeiro city, harvested inputs and statistical data from "Dial 100" (the official channel of the Brazilian government to denounce human rights violations). In addition, the Commission to Combat Religious Intolerance () raised cases, the national press published reports and the Indigenous, Muslim and Jewish communities presented data. This report gathers all these indicators and also innovates by bringing extracts of cases of religious intolerance published in the national media and the press in recent years (posts and news).
The report, made available on 19 January 2023, was divided as follows:
- the first part concentrates on presenting the sources and quantitative data extracted from the governmental sources
- the second part focuses on articles written by researchers who have conducted studies on the subject in Brazil and Latin America in recent years.
