The Road Map for the preparation of a World Heritage nomination file for As-Salt is officially launched

The Mayor hosted an official launching ceremony to present to the wider public the Road Map towards the preparation of the World Heritage nomination file for As-Salt.
As-Salt is an historic town in the Balqa Governorate in northern Jordan, once regional capital of the Governorate of Transjordan during the Ottoman Empire (1868), and inscribed in the Tentative List of UNESCO World Heritage Sites since 2004.
The UNESCO Amman Office, in coordination with a well experienced expert, Architect Giovanni Fontana Antonelli, provided technical cooperation to the Government of Jordan to assess opportunities and strengths for a potential future nomination of the city of as-Salt in the World Heritage list.
As stated by Ms. Costanza Farina, UNESCO Representative to Jordan: "humanity's shared heritage has never been as important as it is today in times of regional turbulences and fragmentation. We must defend humanity’s cultural heritage and diversity against all attack; we must save the past to save the future of each country and our collective history ".
The Road Map launched today constitutes the result of several months of diligent work and is a practical document outlining the steps required by the Government ultimately leading to a future nomination of the site. The Road Map is, quoting Ms. Farina, "a concrete example of a very successful cooperation within different institutions with different mandates, but with the same concern: namely to ensure that the exquisite cultural aspects of as-Salt will be protected and transmitted to the generations to come".
It marks however only the very promising beginning of a long process ahead which will need the commitment of all parties involved to ensure that a successful completion is achieved.
This initiative is integral part of the technical support ensured by UNESCO Amman to the Government of Jordan for the enhanced protection and management of World Heritage properties and for the sites in the Jordan Tentative List.
The event was organized by the Greater as-Salt Municipality in coordination with Jordan Department of Antiquities and successfully gathered members from national authorities, the local community, private sector practitioners, heritage institutions, academicians and university students.
