San Lorenzo de Almagro is the first club in Latin America to join UNESCO to empower youth through sport

San Lorenzo de Almagro, a mythical sports club in Buenos Aires, is reknown for having one of the most important soccer teams in Argentina, winner, among others, of the Copa Libertadores de Am茅rica and the Copa Sudamericana. It is a pioneer in professional women's soccer and has been a national champion twice. It is also a club with championships in basketball, volleyball, hockey, indoor soccer, handball, among others.
San Lorenzo is the first sports club in Latin America to join UNESCO, for transforming its social environment, promoting the role of children and young people in the community and jointly and collectively address problems such as violence, xenophobia and discrimination and promoting inclusion, solidarity, and healthy lifestyles.
鈥淲e are very happy with this alliance with San Lorenzo de Almagro. UNESCO sees sports clubs as strategic partners for the promotion of sport, inclusion and education. We will be able to develop joint actions that promote tolerance, respect and fair play鈥,
assured Lidia Brito, Director of the UNESCO Regional Bureau for Sciences in Latin America and the Caribbean
From a participatory scheme, the alliance seeks to carry out joint initiatives that combat all forms of discrimination on and off the court. Activities that guarantee the rights of boys, girls, adolescents and young people will be developed, and that promote the values of sport, gender equality and healthy lifestyle habits.
"It is an immense pride to have been able to make this alliance with such a recognized and prestigious organization that works so well for a better society. We also believe that it will allow us to strengthen and enhance the important social work that the Club has been carrying out since its very foundation",
said Horacio Arreceygor, president of San Lorenzo.
The promotion of equality and respect for people is another of the strong points to develop, from a perspective that also includes neighborhood schools, game libraries, among other local collectives, with a creative language, based on the arts, music and activities around the neighborhood, as elements of integration. Engage people from vulnerable contexts and empower them to strengthen healthy habits and other relevant skills, such as the continuity of educational and academic cycles and work culture.
With this alliance, it seeks to maximize the possibilities offered by sport to increase well-being, increase cognitive functions, strengthen ties with the community, and create a greater sense of belonging, as proposed by the promoted by UNESCO.
