In a significant step toward advancing disability inclusion in the Caribbean, the UNESCO Office for the Caribbean hosted a two-day online training—Meaningful Inclusion of Persons with Disabilities—on 10-11 April 2025. The event engaged youth-led organizations and young media practitioners from fourteen countries and territories.

Bringing together 55 passionate young leaders, the workshop focused on dismantling persistent barriers faced by persons with disabilities across the region. Based on UNESCO’s , the sessions provided practical tools, strategies, and advocacy skills.

The goal was to encourage participants to promote disability rights within their own communities. Despite progressive legislation and international frameworks like the , people with disabilities in the Caribbean continue to face exclusion from full participation in social, political, and economic life.

This initiative directly addressed that gap by empowering youth as change agents committed to fostering inclusion. One of the most impactful components of the training was the development of individual advocacy plans. Participants are refining these blueprints for change, with a follow-up session scheduled for late May 2025.

In such a session, they will present their strategies and outline the next steps to sustain momentum. More than a training event, the event marked the rise of a regional movement driven by youth determined to reshape systems, challenge narratives, and create societies where everyone—regardless of ability—can thrive.

By investing in youth-led organizations and emerging media voices, UNESCO is tapping into powerful forces for systemic change, helping to build a Caribbean that truly leaves no one behind. As the region advances toward sustainable and inclusive development, the message is clear: disability inclusion is not a choice but a necessity.

Thanks to these young leaders, the Caribbean’s future is brighter, more inclusive, and more equitable for all.
