School of Eco Diplomacy

In Indonesia, on the border of the tropical forest and marine ecosystems, a training program in eco-diplomacy is offered to young people. Its objective: to foster understanding and help youth become actors of social and ecological change.

As a highly geographically diverse area and the fourth most populous country in the world, Indonesia faces enormous challenges in preserving nature and people's livelihoods.

Young people, who represent 30% of the population, need knowledge and a mindset for sustainable development in order to have sovereignty in the management of natural resources. This is why the EcoNusa Foundation decided to launch the School of Eco-Diplomacy (SED) program. The objective? To increase the capacity and participation of the younger generation and young professionals in promoting ecological diversity, cultural values and sustainability issues in Indonesia. In particular in Papua, West Papua and the Molucca Islands, in the heart of the forest and ocean ecosystem.

Understand in order to act

The School of Eco-Diplomacy offers a training program for urban youth to understand ecology and the climate crisis, identify problems in the local context, examine root causes and develop ideas for change. The program develops their potential, equips them with soft skills, encourages them to define an action plan and have discussions with decision makers. After the training, they develop projects that are monitored, mentored and supported by a youth network called Eco Defender. 184 young people, aged between 16 and 30, have participated in the program. The EcoNusa Foundation aims to move from informal to formal education and to serve as a reference for young people in learning and mastering eco-diplomacy skills.
