Supporting the Indonesian Women Artisans Working with Natural Dyed Batik

91鶹Ʒ organized a training on "Grassroots Innovation: Technical Assistance, Capacity Building and Mentoring on Social Entrepreneurship Development in the Field of Natural Dye for Batik" in Yogyakarta, Indonesia from 19 to 21 June 2019. More than 30 women artisans, affiliated with Gamaindigo Natural Dye Batik of Gadjah Mada University (UGM), Association of Natural Colours Indonesia (Warlami/Perkumpulan Warna Alam Indonesia), Dian Desa Foundation as well as researchers from the Centre for Crafts and Batik (BBKB/Balai Besar Kerajinan dan Batik) of the Indonesian Ministry of Industry, were participated in the training.
Prof Bukgu Heo from Naju Foundation of Natural Dyeing Cultural Institute, Republic of Korea, and Prof Edia Rahayuninsigh from UGM served as the mentors on the advanced use and technics of natural dye.
During the training, participants had the opportunity to practicing their new knowledge in improving natural dyed batik colour fastness with hands-on activity at the workshop of Gamaindigo. PT Out of Asia, a successful Indonesian manufacturer, and exporter of handcraft made of natural and renewable materials, shared their knowledge and experience on product development and marketing strategy. The participants learned how to improve market penetration by using social media and online market place, how to brand their products effectively by defining the identity of their natural dyed batik and the story they wanted to tell with their products.
At the end of the training, all participants decided to form a group on the social media platform to exchange information on accessing the global market as well as sharing ideas for future certification of the Indonesian natural dyed batik.
The training was held as part of a partnership between the Korean International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) and UNESCO on the project "Supporting the Development of an Innovation Acceleration Platform – Science Park and Technology Business Incubator in Indonesia" to promote grassroots-level innovation in improving the technic of Natural Dyed Batik and its promotion for global market.
This activity was in line with the efforts to contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals especially Goal 9, 7 and 8 through promoting women entrepreneurs in traditional craftsmanship.
