Tajikistan World Press Freedom Day 2023

Tajikistan celebrates World Press Freedom Day 2023 in Dushanbe jointly with OSCE, EU, OHCHR, and UNESCO

Dushanbe, Tajikistan - Tajikistan is set to celebrate World Press Freedom Day 2023 in Dushanbe on May 3, 2023. This year's theme is "Shaping a Future of Rights. Freedom of Expression as a driver for all other human rights", and the celebration is set of gatherings of media professionals, civil society organizations, and government representatives.

To make this event possible, the Tajik Media Council and NANSMIT, two civil society organizations, have collaborated with the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), the European Union (EU), the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). Together, they have organized a series of meetings throughout Tajikistan to celebrate press freedom and the importance of information as a public good.

In the lead-up to the main event in Dushanbe on May 3, municipalities including Kulyab, GBAO, Khujand, and Bokhtar will also hold events to mark the occasion. These events aim to raise awareness of the importance of press freedom and highlight the challenges faced by journalists in their day-to-day work.

The main event in Dushanbe on May 3 will feature a series of panel discussions, keynote speeches, and workshops. The discussions will focus on the challenges and opportunities facing the media industry in Tajikistan. There will also be follow-up workshops on media development, journalism education, and reporting, aimed at equipping journalists with the skills they need to thrive in a rapidly changing media landscape.

The event is set to be attended by high-level representatives from Tajikistan's government, as well as international organizations and media outlets. It is an opportunity to strengthen relationships and build partnerships between Tajikistan and the wider international community.
