The third “Skilled Teachers - Skilled Nation” regional symposium held in Astana

The discussions of the symposium were devoted to selecting, educating, and recruiting teachers.
A transparent and competence-based recruitment system can ensure that the best candidates are selected from the available pool of applicants, but a number of associated measures will be required to ensure that the best candidates apply and after recruitment, remain in the profession. Ensuring competitive salaries, increased social prestige of the profession, strong initial and continuous support, attractive professional development, and career growth opportunities are some of the key measures that governments can use to attract and retain the best candidates into the profession.
That is why the “Skilled Teachers – Skilled Nation” initiative aims to be a platform for education experts to exchange knowledge and experience on policies and programs on teacher recruitment, in- and pre-service teacher professional development systems, and teachers' career trajectories. It brings together representatives of ministries of education as well as other stakeholders from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan.
Well-trained, supported and valued teachers are essential to ensuring quality education for all and meeting the education targets of the 2030 Agenda. That is why they are a top priority for UNESCO. Worldwide there is a deficit of 69 million teachers and many of those who are at work, lack basic qualifications and training to keep pace with changes in education. UNESCO works with countries to increase the supply of qualified, motivated teachers by improving policies relating to them and supporting quality training which meets learners’ needs.
