Toolkit for Urban Inclusion in Arab Cities launched at the 10th World Urban Forum
UNESCO Cairo Office launched its “Toolkit for Urban Inclusion in Arab Cities” during a special session of the 10th World Urban Forum in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. Co-published with the European Training Centre for Democracy and Human Rights (ETC-Graz) with inputs from members of the Coalition of Arab Cities against Racism, Discrimination, Xenophobia and Intolerance, the Toolkit presents policy models and hands-on guidance on four topics of high relevance to the Arab cities, namely: public participation, access to information, sport for youth inclusion, and citizenship and human rights education.

The session entitled “How Inclusive is your City? Guide to public participation, access to information, youth inclusion through sports, and citizenship and human rights education in cities” took place on 9 February 2020. It brought together city officials, international experts and scholars to discuss opportunities and challenges facing local governments in building inclusive and sustainable cities, present local actions taken in cooperation with other stakeholders, and highlight how local authorities can push the development agenda forward. A technical presentation on the Toolkit, its objectives, structure and content was delivered by the Social and Human Sciences Program Specialist at the UNESCO Cairo Office.
Khaled Abdel Al, Governor of Cairo (Egypt), present at the launch, highlighted the city endeavours in promoting urban inclusion, drawing on a number of practical examples, specifically on the topics of public participation, access to information, youth inclusion, and human rights education. In turn, Akram Khreisat, Director of Amman Urban Observatory, representing the Mayor of Amman (Jordan), emphasized the growing challenges the city is facing; especially, with regard to information and data and the increasing number of refuges and migrants.
