Tour de France races through Haute Provence Global Geopark
The Tour de France, held each year in July, is one of the most prestigious cycling grand tours, and is followed worldwide by fans and media. The cycling champions discovered the breathtaking landscapes of the Haute Provence Geopark on Wednesday 22 July, as 168 riders took the start of stage 17 from the Global Geopark鈥檚 capital, Digne-les-Bains.
Located in south-eastern France, between the Alps and Provence, the Haute-Provence Geopark is the largest geological open-air museum in France. The reserve includes 18 geological sites more than 300 million years old, which contain numerous fossil-rich materials and fascinating rock formations. But geoparks are also connected with sports! The 161 km stage from Digne-les-Bains to Pra Loup took the race into the Alps. Simon Geschke, 29, claimed his first Tour de France stage victory.
