Towards Enhanced Cooperation between the Republic of Albania and UNESCO

Today, during her first official visit to the Republic of Albania, the Director-General of UNESCO, Ms Irina Bokova met the President of Republic H.E. Mr Bujar Nishani and the Prime Minister, H.E. Mr. Edi Rama.

The Director-General noted with great satisfaction the excellent cooperation between UNESCO and Republic of Albania and expressed her commitment to further strengthen engagement of the Organization towards the achievement of common objectives in the field of education, culture, science and freedom of expression.

The promotion and preservation of Albania鈥檚 rich cultural heritage and the enhancement of intercultural dialogue were the basis of their discussions. The Director-General highlighted UNESCO鈥檚 achievements in these fields and highlighted the important role that Albania could play at regional level.

She underlined the progress made by UNESCO in its efforts towards the recognition of culture for sustainable development in the framework of the Post-2015 Agenda.

During the same day the Director-General also met, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, H.E. Mr. Ditmir Bushati, the Minister of Environment, Mr. Lefter Koka and the Minister of Education and Sports, Ms Lindita Nikolla.

Those meetings were an opportunity to discuss a broad range of questions, focusing on strengthening regional cooperation in the field of culture, the challenges of protecting the environment and biodiversity, the needs to support the elaboration of new curriculums and education for sustainable development.

On Saturday 29 March 2014, the Director-General, together with the Minister of Culture, Mirela Kumbaro, will visit the World Heritage site of Berat and attend the third edition of sub-regional event of the 鈥楤alkan Bridges Speak鈥 project organized within the framework of UNESCO鈥檚 global initiative 鈥淐ulture: A Bridge to Development.鈥.
