The International Year of Glaciers’ Preservation 2025 and World Day for Glaciers aim to raise global awareness about the critical role of glaciers, snow and ice in the climate system and the hydrological cycle, and the economic, social and environmental impacts of the impending changes in the Earth’s cryosphere, and to encourage the exchange of knowledge and best practices regarding glacier preservation and adaptation strategies.

The International Year of Glaciers’ Preservation 2025 and World Day for Glaciers were adopted by a UN General Assembly resolution inviting UNESCO and WMO, in cooperation with UN Member States and relevant organizations of the United Nations system, to facilitate their implementation.

This event will serve as a platform for stakeholders to express their commitments to the International Year of Glacier Preservation 2025 and contribute to developing a road map towards 2025. Participants will identify outstanding gaps in understanding the link between glacier changes and water resources and risks to societies, and the key actions necessary to enhance the access to critical information, that would enhance the ability of society to adapt. The event will also provide opportunity to share lessons learnt and discuss new entry points and innovative approaches and projects to tackle the problem at the national, regional and global scale, and to identify successful and potential resource mobilization strategies to address the challenges identified.

The session will include an overview of the state of glaciers globally, followed by a short presentation on the draft roadmap for the International Year, and panel discussions.

Representatives of Member States and international organizations will discuss the critical role of glaciers and the cryosphere, and the economic, social and environmental impacts of the accelerated melting of glaciers and the cryosphere. These panel discussions will be an opportunity to share solutions to address the impacts of melting glaciers, providing examples of successful projects and possibilities to support resource mobilization in the context of the International Year of Glaciers’ Preservation 2025. They will focus on glacier preservation through different funding mechanisms, resources mobilization efforts, and technical implementation.
