The UNESCO Office for the GCC and Yemen, in collaboration with the Yemeni National Commission for UNESCO, organized a training workshop on Man & Biosphere Reserves in preparation for the submission of 3 new sites in Yemen. The 3 days’ training sessions, 27-29 November 2021, brought together Yemeni professionals and representatives from national stakeholders and civil society involved in the management of the proposed new sites.
The training objectives was to introduce the concept and application requirements of potential sites to be nominated under UNESCO’s MAB Programme. Participants were also trained on key elements and best practices for the efficient planning and successful management of Biosphere Reserves. The training also featured presentations on the 3 potential new Biosphere reserves in Yemen:
  • Hawf Protected Area is located in east of Yemen adjacent to Oman’s Jebel Samhan Nature Reserve. The site known as a “fog oasis” is a part of the Horn of Africa Biodiversity Hotspot. The transboundary area of Hawf and the Dhofar Mountains in Oman is a refuge for leopard and Nubian ibex[1]. This site is also registered under the tentative list as a Natural World Heritage site since 2002.

  • Kamaran Island is the largest of the Yemeni Islands in the Red Sea. This marine protected area is known for its rich biodiversity from coral reefs, to seagrass and mangroves. It is also a feeding area for seabirds.

If successful, these sites will become members of the Reserves which counts today 727 Biosphere Reserves in 131 Countries. The UNESCO Biosphere reserves are living laboratories that stimulates nature-based solutions for sustainable development, while contributing to enhancing the livelihood of local communities living in and around the Biosphere Reserve.
