Training Workshop on Community Based Tourism in Khartoum, Sudan

On 24-26 March 2019, the UNESCO Khartoum Office in partnership with the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Antiquities (MoCTA) and Sudanese National Commission for Education, Science and Culture (NatCom) organized a training workshop (TWS) on Community Based Tourism in Sudanair Training Center, Khartoum, Sudan. The TWS aimed to develop national capacities in community based and homestay tourism, and to build platform for reforming and developing tourism sector in Sudan; and attracted 26 participants including 12 women, who represented both, public and private parts of the tourism sector in Sudan.

The opening session was honoured by H.E. Dr. Graham Abdelgadir, the Undersecretary in the MoCTA, H.E. Dr. Pavel Kroupkine, the UNESCO Representative to Sudan, and H.E. Prof. Fabrizio Lobasso, the Ambassador of Italy in Sudan. In encouraging his key-note speech Prof. Fabrizio Lobasso shared his thoughts about tourism industry development, outlining some important gaps for Sudan.

 

The technical sessions were led by a Malaysian expert, Prof. Ahmad Som, who led training through presentation and group work on the following topics:

  1. Community Based Tourism: Concepts and Practices
  2. Benefits and Challenges of Community Based Tourism in Developing Countries
  3. Pro-Poor Tourism and Poverty Eradication
  4. Understanding Cultural and Heritage Tourism
  5. Homestay and Tourism Development Criteria, Guidelines and Policies
  6. Case studies of successful Homestay and Community Based Tourism Programmes: Lessons learned from Malaysia

 

The workshop was closed with session that honoured and addressed by H.E. Dr. Somia Idris Okoued, the State Minister in the MoCTA, who outlined the government interest in tourism sector development. Additionally, the closing session was addressed by H.E. Dr. Graham Abdelgadir, the Undersecretary in the  MoCTA, who declared valuation of workshop outcomes and further capacity development through trained participants.

 

In the end of the closing session; the trainees received the certificates.
