Training Workshop on UNESCO 1970 Convention (Fight against Illicit Trafficking of Cultural Artefacts) and 1954 Convention (Protection of Cultural Heritage during Armed Conflict) in Khartoum, Sudan
On 1-4 October 2018, the UNESCO’s Khartoum and Cairo Offices in collaboration with the Sudanese National Commission for Education, Science and Culture (NATCOM) and National Corporation for Antiquities and Museums (NCAM) organized a Training Workshop on Protecting Cultural Artefacts against Illicit Trafficking and during Armed Conflicts. The event took place in Grand Holiday Villa, Khartoum, and attracted 49 participants, including 14 from out of Khartoum and 14 women. The participants were from the Sudanese National Corporation for Antiquities and Museums; Custom Authority; Tourism Police; INTERPOL; Ministry of Defense; Ministry of Justice; Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Antiquities; NATCOM, National TV and Radio Corporation; Institute for African and Asian studies in Khartoum University; etc. For an opening session came even more people, including H.E. Mr. Fabrizio Lobasso, the Ambassador of Italy, and H.E. Mr. Pavel Kroupkine, the UNESCO Representative to Sudan.
During the opening session, Dr. Pavel Kroupkine, the UNESCO Representative to Sudan, Dr. Abdelgadir Noureddin, the Secretary General of NATCOM, Dr. Titaina Villgas, Culture Programme Specialist in UNESCO Cairo Office, and Dr. Abdelrahman Ali, General Director of NCAM, welcomed the participants and wished them to receive a fruitful experience from working with each other and with invited international experts, who led the 4-day training workshop. They were: Dr. Tatiana Villegas from UNESCO Cairo Office, Major. Alfio Gullootta from Italian Carabineers, Ms. Marina Schneider from UNIDROIT, Mr. Gonzalo Giordano from INTERPOL, Mr. Samer Abdel Ghafour from UNESCO project in post-conflict Syria, and Dr. Shaaban Abd El Gawad from Egyptian Ministry of Antiquities.
The training continued for 4 days that ended with a closing session followed by the distribution of certificates to participants.
