Transboundary waters meeting in Rome

The sixth session of the Meeting of the Parties to the UNECE Convention on the Protection and Use of Transboundary Watercourses and International Lakes took place on 28–30 November in Rome, hosted by the Italian Ministry of Environment. Some 330 participants from the UNECE region and beyond attended. Several decisions were adopted, including one that enables and simplifies the accession of non-UNECE countries to the Convention – this decision reconfirms the conviction of the Parties that the Convention is an effective instrument beyond the UNECE region. A programme of work for 2013–2015 was also adopted; to answer today’s challenges, new areas of work included quantifying the benefits of transboundary cooperation and a thematic assessment on the water-food-energy-ecosystems nexus. Visit the UNECE website for details of the meeting and to access documents, press releases, interviews and photos.
