UNESCO Regional Office in Bangkok and the Asia-Pacific Centre of Education for International Understanding (APCEIU) are pleased to invite education stakeholders across the region to a hands-on orientation workshop introducing the new GCED Monitoring Toolkit (2024). Developed by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) and APCEIU, the Toolkit provides a practical framework for assessing how Global Citizenship Education (GCED) and Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) are integrated into national education systems—from curriculum and policy to classroom practice.

The workshop will support participants in strengthening GCED and ESD implementation through targeted capacity-building, interactive sessions, and real-world case studies.

This initiative builds on the momentum of the Recommendation on Education for Peace, Human Rights and Sustainable Development, adopted by UNESCO’s General Conference in November 2023, and a regional Roadmap* co-developed during a high-level policy dialogue in Bangkok in June 2024.

Background

While more than 90% of countries report embedding GCED and ESD in education policies and curricula, implementation often falls short at the classroom level. A global survey of 58,000 teachers conducted by UNESCO and Education International found that 1 in 4 teachers felt unprepared to teach these themes, particularly in relation to socio-emotional learning and behavioral change.

To address this, the GCED Monitoring Toolkit offers clear guidance for identifying priorities, tracking progress, and supporting educators in translating global values—such as peace, equity, and sustainability—into meaningful teaching and learning strategies.

Workshop objectives

  • Introduce the GCED Monitoring Toolkit and its practical applications
  • Strengthen the capacity of education professionals to integrate GCED and ESD through hands-on sessions and real-world examples
  • Promote more consistent and measurable approaches to GCED implementation across Asia-Pacific

Who can attend

  • Education policymakers and ministry officials
  • Members of the Asia-Pacific Regional GCED Network
  • School leaders, teachers, and curriculum specialists
  • Youth representatives and education-focused NGOs
