UNESCO and partners commemorate International Day of Women and Girls in Science
UNESCO Regional Office for Southern Africa, in partnership with the UNWOMEN, the Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World (OWSD) and Elevate Trust, together with other key stakeholders and partners in gender equality and women’s empowerment in Science Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), have come together to celebrate the International Day of Women and Girls in Science 2022. The celebration will be held on 11 February, 2022 at the University of Zimbabwe.
The objective of the day is to highlight the roles of women scientists in solving water-related challenges we face currently and in the future. This will also be an opportunity to launch a video series of women in STEM talking about their journeys in science and offering advice to the next generation of scientists.
This Day serves as a reminder that women and girls play a critical role in science and technology communities and that their participation should be strengthened. Tackling some of the greatest challenges of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and the African Union’s Agenda 2063; from improving health to combatting climate change, will rely on harnessing all talent. That means getting more women working in these fields. Diversity in research expands the pool of talented researchers, bringing in fresh perspectives, talent and creativity.
