Event
UNESCO and UNICEF to launch a new tool to help education systems support learner and teacher well-being

The UNESCO Regional Office in Bangkok and the UNICEF Regional Office for East Asia and the Pacific are pleased to invite you to the online launch of their new tool, aimed at supporting the Review and Assessment of Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) in the Education Sector.
The tool will be launched during a regional webinar on Enhancing Education Sector Approaches to Addressing Learner and Teacher MHPSS Needs, organized by the Asia-Pacific Thematic Working Group on School Health, Nutrition and Well-being. This webinar will provide a platform to explore how education systems can strengthen MHPSS efforts, drawing insights from diverse stakeholders across Asia-Pacific.
Background
Good mental health and well-being are essential for students to access and fully participate in education. Evidence shows that learners and teachers in Asia-Pacific face significant challenges related to mental health. Even before COVID-19, the region had the highest percentage of adolescents with mental disorders. The pandemic exacerbated this situation, with a 2020 UNICEF survey across 46 countries revealing that 83% of children and 89% of parents reported an increase in negative feelings, while 46% of caregivers observed signs of psychological distress in their children.
Recognizing the urgent need to address MHPSS both in, and through education, UNESCO Bangkok and UNICEF EAPRO have developed the Review and Assessment of MHPSS in the Education Sector (RAMES) tool, a practical assessment framework to help Ministries of Education evaluate their readiness and response to MHPSS needs. This tool will support national education strategies, inform policies, and strengthen multisectoral collaboration to promote student and teacher well-being.
Webinar objectives
- Showcase the RAMES tool and its applications in strengthening MHPSS initiatives within education sector planning and policy.
- Raise awareness of MHPSS as a key factor in quality education, highlighting the role of education systems in promoting mental well-being.
- Facilitate a learning exchange on effective MHPSS programming, including country experiences and multi-sectoral collaboration.
