Youth to take center stage at UNESCO speech competition on the international day against school violence

UNESCO’s Regional Office in Bangkok and Chulalongkorn University’s Faculty of Education are co-hosting a speech competition on 8 November to commemorate the International Day Against Violence and Bullying at School, Including Cyberbullying.
Observed on the first Thursday of every November, this international day raises awareness about the detrimental impact of bullying and cyberbullying on student learning and well-being. Following the speech competition, an intergenerational dialogue session will invite reflections on this year’s global theme, ‘Protect, Educate, Empower: Learners Call for Safe and Inclusive Schools.’
Objectives
Key objectives of the speech competition and intergenerational dialogue:
- Amplify student voices on bullying and violence in schools, including cyberbullying, by sharing their personal insights, expectations, and ideas on what makes a safe and enabling learning environment
- Raise awareness of the role of education in preventing violence and bullying, including all forms of cyberbullying, and ensure inclusive, safe and welcoming learning environments for all students
- Facilitate intergenerational dialogue between learners and education policy-makers and practitioners, fostering mutual understanding and collaboration on solutions
- Encourage all educational stakeholders, including the Office of the Basic Education Commission (OBEC) Thailand, the OBEC Safety Center, school leaders, civil society organizations (CSOs), and youth-led organizations, to consider and share actionable solutions, including as part of current or planned initiatives in Thailand on safe learning environments that are free from all forms of violence
