UNESCO Director-General condemns the killing of journalist Raúl Celis López in Peru

Audrey Azoulay, Director-General of UNESCO, has condemned the killing of journalist Raúl Celis López in Iquitos, Peru, on 7 May 2025.

I condemn the killing of journalist Raúl Celis López and call for a thorough and transparent investigation to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice. Impunity for such crimes must not be tolerated as it only emboldens those who seek to silence journalists and prevent them from fulfilling their crucial role of informing the public.

Raúl Celis López was the host of the program Hora Cero on Radio Karibeña. He had worked as a journalist for 30 years in several outlets including Radio Tarapoto. He was reportedly shot dead by two unidentified gunmen on a motorcycle while on his way to the radio station early in the morning.

Raúl Celis López is the second journalist killed in Peru in 2025.
