UNESCO Director-General condemns killing of media workers Farah Omar and Rabih Me’mari in Lebanon
I condemn the killings of Farah Omar and Rabih Me’mari. The protection of journalists and media workers as civilians is a requirement under international law, including UN Security Council Resolution 2222/2015 on the protection of journalists, media professionals and associated personnel in situations of conflict. I call for a full and transparent investigation into the circumstances of their deaths.
Farah Omar was a reporter and Rabih Me’mari a cameraman, both for Al Mayadeen TV. They were reportedly killed in a rocket strike in the town of Tayr Harfa, in southern Lebanon near the Israeli border, while reporting on hostilities in the region.
UNESCO promotes the safety of journalists through global awareness-raising, capacity building and by coordinating the implementation of the on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.
