UNESCO’s General Conference will be asked to approve a $507mn Expenditure Plan for the Organization in 2014-2015, when it meets in November. This was one of the major decisions taken by the Executive Board, during its 192nd session which closed on Friday 11 October.

The Expenditure Plan differs from the UNESCO’s Regular Budget, which is set at $653m and includes the membership dues from all 195 Member States. Instead, it takes into account the continuing suspension of these dues from the United States, and reflects the actual resources that will be available to UNESCO for its programmes and activities over the coming biennium.

            The United States suspended its contributions to UNESCO following the admission of Palestine in 2011, but remains a Member State of the Organization.

            During its session, the Board also nominated Irina Bokova for a second four-year term as Director-General of UNESCO and China’s Vice Minister of Education, Hao Ping, for the two-year term of President of the General Conference.

            The General Conference (November 5-20) will examine these nominations and proceed to an election for both posts.

            The 192^nd session of the Board set the provisional agenda for the Conference, which is UNESCO’s main governing body and  brings together all Member States every two years and. Together they determine the policies and the main lines of work of the Organization and set its programme and budget.
