Guilherme Canela, Chief of the Freedom of Expression and Safety of Journalists Section at UNESCO headquarters in Paris, chaired the session "Ensuring future-proof regulation of digital platforms: anticipating new technologies and risks, establishing safety limits" on June 6th, as part of the twelfth edition of RightsCon held in Costa Rica.

During the conversation with human rights organizations and interested participants, the regulation of digital platforms and the development of the "Guidelines for the regulation of digital platforms" by UNESCO were discussed.

As different countries examine or approve policies to regulate online content, it is crucial to avoid excessive and unnecessary restrictions that could affect freedom of expression. Therefore, the session explored various strategies to address this challenge, with contributions from countries such as Myanmar, Canada, and Mexico, based on their own experiences.

To be part of this process, we recommend that all individuals who wish to participate read the 3.0 document available on our website and provide their comments on any paragraphs that can be improved and enriched.

Guilherme Canela

The results of this session will enable UNESCO to create a regulatory framework based on a democratic process and consider the steps to be taken for the development of this document.

Until June 26, 2023, all interested individuals can add their comments to the document titled "Digital governance and the challenges for trust and safety (Part 3)" at the following link: /en/internet-conference
