UNESCO to participate in the General Assembly of the Regional Centre for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage in South-Eastern Europe
On 1 April 2014, the Sofia-based Regional Centre for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage in South-Eastern Europe, operating under the auspices of UNESCO, will hold the second ordinary session of its General Assembly. The meeting will take place in Sofia, Bulgaria.
Participants in the meeting will be representatives of the Centre’s board, UNESCO, and the South-East European countries that are Member States of the Centre, namely: Albania, Armenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Montenegro, Romania, Serbia, The former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and Turkey.
This meeting will mostly focus on the presentation and discussion of the following issues:
- Introduction of new Member States of the Centre (Cyprus, Slovenia).
- Presentation of the updated Executive Board and the new Executive Director.
- Discussion and adoption of the key documents of the Regional Centre in Sofia (Amendments to the Statutes; Annual report 2013; Financial report 2013; Work plan for 2014; and, Budget for 2014).
UNESCO will be represented at the meeting by: Frank Proschan, Chief, Programme and Evaluation Unit, UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage, and Representative of the Director-General of UNESCO in the General Assembly of the Sofia Regional Centre; and Matteo Rosati, Programme Officer, Culture Unit, UNESCO Regional Bureau for Science and Culture in Europe, Venice (Italy).

The Regional Centre for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage in South-Eastern Europe was established in Sofia on the basis of an agreement between UNESCO and the Government of Bulgaria signed on 25 October 2010.
The main objectives are: a) to promote the UNESCO Convention on protection of intangible cultural heritage and contribute to its implementation in the sub-region of South East Europe; b) to increase the participation of communities, groups and individuals in safeguarding intangible cultural heritage in the countries of the region; and c) to enhance the capacity of the South-Eastern European Member States of UNESCO in safeguarding intangible cultural heritage.
