On September 29th and 30th the Queen Rania Teacher Academy held brain storming workshops on Math and Physics education that included a diverse group of educators: Supervisors, university professors, and teachers from the private and public sectors. The workshop is part of the UNESCO Enhancing Access to Secondary Education and Quality Results for Youth Affected by the Syria Crisis EASE project, generously funded by the Saudi Fund for Development. On September 29th and 30th the Queen Rania Teacher Academy held brain storming workshops on Math and Physics education that included a diverse group of educators:  Supervisors, university professors, and teachers from the private and public sectors. The workshop is part of the UNESCO Enhancing Access to Secondary Education and Quality Results for Youth Affected by the Syria Crisis EASE project, generously funded by the Saudi Fund for Development.

The project, generously funded by the Saudi Fund for Development, is working on creating an online teacher-training course that will combine three important factors: utilizing technology, creating specialized content and delivering a blended approach to teacher training (BATT), an approach that includes both online and face to face components. The project’s design and implementation will be applied in two stages. The first stage will concentrate on developing and piloting the blended approach to the training course. The second stage will involve scaling up and extending the training to a large number of teachers across Jordan.

The purpose of the workshop was to understand the needs of teachers in the field, and use the information gleaned from the workshop to develop training modules based on those needs. The workshop used a brainstorming method called, “Work Café” where participants were divided into groups and each group was appointed a speaker. Each table discussed a set of three questions including:

·         Based on your experience, what are the major challenges that face students in Math/ Physics?

·         What are the major concepts in Physics/ Math that students find it difficult to comprehend?

·         What methodology did you use to convey the difficult information to the students?

After the discussion, the rest of the group moved to another table while the speaker remained to explain to the new group what was agreed. They then discussed the questions further and provided their opinion.  The discussions based on these questions will inform the creation of training modules for math and science that will be delivered using the online platform as part of the BATT.
