UNESCO promotes Quality Physical Education in Kazakhstan

A workshop on "Promoting Quality Physical Education (QPE) in Kazakhstan" was held in Astana on 21 July 2023, organised by the Social and Human Sciences Sector of the UNESCO Almaty Cluster Office and (NSPCPE).
More than 50 people, including online participants, attended this significant event. Among them were representatives from , , and . In addition, the event was attended by representatives of and in Kazakhstan, non-governmental organizations, as well as regional scientific-methodological centres regulating issues of sports and physical education under the education administrations.

The project will make it possible to amend the existing normative acts regulating the conditions necessary for the study of physical education
In the opening part of the seminar, Ms. Elena Tarasenko, Deputy Chairperson of the National Commission on Women and Family, Demographic Policy, said, "The principles of gender equality and inclusivity in QPE are a guarantee for the formation of a physically active and socially responsible generation."
Ms. Dina Amrisheva, UN Women Head of Office a.i., noted, "Gender Equality stands at the core of ensuring equal rights, opportunities, and inclusive access to physical education and sports activities for all children. Undoubtedly, education plays a pivotal role in driving transformative changes, and social norms and gender stereotypes should not hinder children from realizing their dreams."

In the main part of the event, Mr. Sagdat Sadykov, General Director of NSPCPE, made a presentation titled "Overview of current practices in Physical Education in Kazakhstan". He outlined the key aspects of the current state of physical education and touched upon the pressing issues that should be taken into account in the formation of the QPE strategy in Kazakhstan.
Continuing the discussion, Dr. Aliya Ilyassova, a project coordinator and expert, shared with the participants and of QPE developed by UNESCO. She also drew the audience's attention to the international experience of implementing effective physical education, demonstrating the QPE policy development strategies used in UNESCO projects, which could be adapted for Kazakhstan.

To conclude the seminar, participants discussed the process of creating a national QPE policy. They emphasized the importance of timely formulating this strategy and the possibilities of its further analysis and discussion within the framework of project consultative meetings.
This project is part of UNESCO's long-term efforts to promote among young people. Paying significant attention to physical health and well-being, UNESCO strives to foster conditions where young people, regardless of their background and abilities, have the opportunity for holistic development, including sports skills and active participation in the sporting life of society.
