Workshop on the Role of Water Harvesting Programmes in Resilience and Adaptation to Climate Change in the Sudan
On the 11 April 2017, the Khartoum office of UNESCO in collaboration with the UNESCO Regional Center for Water Harvesting, the Institute of Environmental Studies of the Khartoum University and the Sudanese Commission for Education, Sciences and Culture, organized a workshop on the Role of Water Harvesting Programmes in Resilience and Adaptation to Climate Change in the Sudan, that took place in Khartoum, Sharjah Hall with participation from key stakeholders in the Water and Environment Sectors in Sudan. The workshop was honoured by H.E. Dr. Tabitha Botros, the State Minister for Water Resources, Irrigation and Electricity, Dr. Pavel Kroupkine, the Representative of UNESCO to Sudan, Prof. Abdin Salih, the Representative of Sudan in UNESCO’s Executive Board, Mr. Hatim Ali Al-Badri, the General Director of UNESCO Category II Center for Water Harvesting, and Dr. Mohamed Salih Dafalla, the Director of the Institute of Environmental Studies, and representatives of the Embassies of France, Sweden and Malaysia.

The opening ceremony started with a welcome speech by Mr. Hatim Ali Al-Badri, the General Director of the UNESCO Category II Center for Water Harvesting, where the following speaker, H.E. Dr. Pavel Kroupkine spoke about UNESCO support for Water Harvesting in Sudan. Then, the Director of the Institute of Environmental Studies spoke about Climate Change concerns in Sudan, followed by a speech from Prof. Abdin Salih, the Representative of Sudan in UNESCO’s Executive Board, where he briefed the audience about Water Harvesting in Sudan. Finally, H.E Tabitha Botros, the State Minister for Water Resources closed the Opening Ceremony with talk on the ambitious Zero Thirst Project under implementation by the Ministry of Water Resources in Sudan.

The First Technical Session, chaired by Prof. Abdin Salih, included two presentations: the first was on Climate in Sudan by Dr. Sumaya Zaki-Eldin, and the secondon Water Harvesting in Sudan by Dr. Wifag Mahmoud, and appropriate discussions.

The Second Technical Session included key presentation by Dr. Mutasim Nimir on The implementation of NAPA Priority interventions to build resilience in the agriculture and water sectors to the adverse impacts of climate change in the Sudan, including raising awareness on farming methodologies, improving Water Harvesting/Storage, Energy and Water Quality.

The workshop concluded the necessity to bring in the water harvesting technologies in the efforts in strengthening resilience of Sudanese rural communities.
