World Press Freedom Conference 2020 in Hague – Sudanese Margins

This year, due to the COVID pandemic restrictions, the annual World Press Freedom Conference (WPFC) was postponed from traditional time around 3 May, and finally took place on 9-10 December 2020 in Hague, Netherlands, with significant remote component. The Dutch Embassy and UNESCO Khartoum office decided to organize a side event with participation of those, who registered to WPFC_2020, however, did not succeed to go to Hague. The event was organized on 10 December 2020 in the UNESCO Khartoum office, and included listening the presentations of the 2nd day of the Conference and discussing relevant issues, such as
Feedback on changing on media freedom in Sudan based on the results of the UNESCO survey among journalists and media experts (*).
The status of the Safety of Journalists in Sudan: issues and how progress could be made.
Journalists’ dreams about the future of media in Sudan.

10 journalists including 5 women participated in following the Conference and discussing the follow-up. The discussion was moderated by Mr. Khalid Fathi, Editor-in-chief of Al-Tayyar newspaper, and resulted in following list of needs:

Under Freedom of Expression:

  1. Revising media and journalism laws, especially related to freedom of expression, access to information, safety of journalists and organizing journalism work.
  2. Having better environment in sharing information with the public by the different authorities.
  3. Revising financial flows in media sector for enabling better quality journalism, and keeping experienced journalists from emigration.
  4. Capacity building for journalists – enabling them to work better.
  5. Having independent media outlets, which represent the society and not the government.
  6. Reducing influence of the military on the society.

Under Safety of Journalists:

  1. Acquiring more public support for journalists.
  2. Raising awareness among journalists and law agencies about safe journalism’s issues.
