Communication and Information
The digital revolution has transformed East Asia, but its benefits haven't reached everyone equally. While citizens, especially youth, are highly connected, many lack the skills to navigate the online world effectively. This hinders access to reliable information and participation in development. Furthermore, women, girls, and persons with disabilities are often underrepresented in the media landscape, lacking platforms and skills for meaningful participation. This reinforces a homogenous media narrative and perpetuates inequalities.
UNESCO Regional Office for East Asia (UNESCO Beijing Office)'s Communication and Information Sector (CI) is committed to bridging this gap. We focus on three key areas: Media Pluralism and Diversity, Universal Access to Information, and Media and Information Literacy (MIL) for All. These initiatives aim to create inclusive knowledge societies in East Asia where everyone, including marginalized populations, can access information, participate meaningfully in media, and become discerning digital citizens.
Our Focus Areas and Successful Cases
- Building Bridges of Knowledge: Empowering Journalists, Educators, Policymakers and Young People with Media and Information Literacy
In today's digital age, information travels faster than ever before. Yet, amidst this abundance lies a hidden threat: misinformation and disinformation can spread like wildfire, leaving citizens vulnerable to manipulation and mistrust. UNESCO is at the forefront of addressing this challenge, working alongside Mongolian stakeholders to equip citizens with the critical skills needed to navigate the information landscape. By promoting critical thinking skills and fostering a culture of information verification, we are empowering Mongolian citizens to become discerning digital citizens, able to navigate the vast information landscape with confidence. This transformative initiative, supported by the UNESCO Multi-Donor Programme on Freedom of Expression and Safety of Journalists and the International Programme for the Development of Communication, is paving the way for a more informed and empowered Mongolia.
UNESCO's approach to fostering Media and Information Literacy (MIL) in Mongolia is multifaceted, aiming to equip citizens with the critical skills they need to navigate the information landscape.

These forums bring together government, media, and civil society to discuss the importance of MIL in promoting a healthy information environment for a more MIL-literate Mongolia.

In China, UNESCO works on initiative to equip educator with the skills and resources to integrate MIL into the national curriculum. This initiative includes adapting UNESCO's MIL curriculum for the Chinese context, developing teacher training programmes, and creating a repository of training resources. Additionally, national consultations will inform the development of a comprehensive MIL policy and strategy, ensuring inclusivity for all students.
These initiatives are building momentum, with media houses integrating MIL into their editorial policies and journalists actively creating content that empowers audiences. Looking ahead, UNESCO remains committed to expanding this impact and building a future where everyone can navigate the digital world with confidence.
