Rehabilitation of the Seiyoun Palace in Hadhramaut/Yemen

Project Duration: 2024-Present
Seiyun Palace Yemen

Completed in the 1920s, Seiyun Palace was the royal residence of the sultan of Kathiri, located in the town of Seiyun in the Hadhramaut region, Yemen. It is one of the world’s largest mud-brick structures; the palace also houses a museum since 1984.

In the context of the lack of maintenance and the protracted conflict in Yemen, the palace has suffered damage to the base of the structure, walls and ceilings which need to be repaired and then routinely maintained.

Funded by the Saudi Development and Reconstruction Program for Yemen (SDRPY), UNESCO Regional Office for the Gulf States and Yemen launched a project with close collaboration with the General Organization for Antiquities and Museums in Yemen (GOAM) early 2023 to rehabilitate the Palace.

The project contributes to one of culture programme ‘s objective to enhance capacities to conserve, protect and manage threatened sites in Yemen.
