Accelerating gender equality in the water domain
UNESCO World Water Assessment Programme
2021

The Multi-stakeholder Coalition takes collective and concrete action to address gender disparities in water-related issues, in line with the five agreed game changers of the Water Action Agenda (#SDGAction50387), which were jointly stipulated in the Accelerating gender equality in the water domain: a call for action - UNESCO WWAP Water and Gender Working Group position paper.

Coalition's Game-Changers

  • Including gender-equality principles in funding, which promote women's leadership, protect their water rights and no longer rely on unpaid work of women and girls for securing and managing water

  • Narrowing the persisting gap between policy and practice in the water domain to ensure gender-equality policies and necessary mechanisms are in place for implementation

  • Fostering women’s leadership for meaningful participation through education and capacity development

  • Countering social norms and stereotypes that may have negative effects on water access, use and inclusive decision-making

  • Implementing the collection, analysis and use of sex-disaggregated water data to inform water policies through the application of appropriate gender-responsive indicators

The Coalition Members actively disseminate the Initiative’s findings and progress by participating in key international and regional events.
